Cocktail party phenomenon. The way in which our attention can be grabbed by a salient stimulus; for example, we may think we are paying attention to a conversation at a cocktail party, but will hear our name mentioned in a conversation across the room to which we had thought we were not paying attention.
Neural pathway. A set of connections from one part of the brain to another, connecting different regions and enabling signals to be sent. There are several major pathways in the brain involved in maintaining consciousness.
